  • Brazil: the development of relations with India

From 3rd to 5th June, the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, paid an important official visit to India as part of the process of enhancement of bilateral relations and IBSA, an organisation connecting the governments of Brazil, India and South Africa. During the meetings Brazil and India deepened their cooperation in the fields of energy, science, defence, and the fight against terrorism. Lula's visit to India and, following that, to Morocco shows that amongst Brazilian foreign policy priorities is the will to cooperate with Asian and African developing countries through the promotion of economic growth accompanied by social development and the reduction of inequalities. It should also be noted that penetrating Asian and African markets is easier than penetrating developed countries'. Considerable barriers that hinder the development of bilateral trade remain, however, between Brazil and India.
