(A&F) Turkey: the AKP and the post-electoral alliances
On Sunday 22 July, 43 million Turkish citizens will express their preferences at the urns for the makeup of the new parliament. The elections arrive at a delicate moment, the country is divided between religious and nationalistic sentiments – each ever more exasperated by the other. The Party of Justice and Development (AKP), currently in power, will almost certainly be reconfirmed as the leading political force but is unlikely to obtain a clear majority. Internal tensions are compounded by problems with the USA over the military incursions into Iraqi Kurdistan.
